    Abstract:

Purpose: To explore the correlation among foot morphology and toe /metatarsophalangeal joint muscle strength to predict movement performance and reduce/prevent foot injuries. Methods: 26 male recreational runners were recruited. Foot length, truncated foot length, foot width, navicular height, dorsum of foot height at 50% the foot length, metatarsophalangeal joint strength, tensile force of the first , and remaining four toesand were measured by using Sylvac digital caliper, metatarsophalangeal joint strength measuring instruct, and Ailitech-AFG500 dynameter respectively. Partial correlations were used to analyze correlation between parameters. Result: With adjusted age and BMI, 1) the foot width in standing position and truncated foot length in sitting and standing position were positively correlated to tensile force of the first toe; 2) the foot length, foot width and truncated foot length were positively correlated to tensile force of the remaining four toes in both position, and arch height index in sitting position was negatively associated with tensile force of the remaining four toes; 3) the foot width was positively correlated to metatarsophalangeal joint strength in both position. Conclusion: The longer foot length, foot width, truncated foot length, and lower arch height in normal range might relate to greater foot muscle strength. The targeted training plan can be made to enhance physical performance, and predictive weak muscles can be trained to prevent foot injury.
